Fela was born in Abeokuta, today’s capital of Ogun State in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, then a village in the British Colony of Nigeria, in Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti on 15 October 1938 into a upper middle-class family. His father, Reverend Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, an anglican minister with headquarters in the church, was the first president of the Teacher’s Union of Nigeria. He was a feminist leader in the anti-colonial movement.
The first cousin in the case of Nigerian writer and Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, the first African to be awarded the Nobel Prize to Literature, was his brothers Beko Ransome Kuti and Olikoye Ransome-Kuti, both of them Medical Physicians.
How Fela Anikulapo Kuti Died (The Biography of Fela Anikulapo Kuti)
The influential AIDS activist and former Minister for Health Olikoye Ransome-Kuti revealed on August 3, 1997 that his younger brother died a day before of AIDS-related complications. However, there was no definite indication that Kuti died of HIV-AIDs related complications and that there was considerable skepticism about this alleged cause of death and the sources that popularized this claim. After the death of Fela, the New Afrika Shrine has been opened in another part of Lagos under his son Femi’s supervision.
