Many people do not know uptil today that Miam Makeba was/is a South African singer, songwriter as well as actress, She was know to become the UN Ambassador of Goodwill and human rights activist, that is why she was nicknamed Mama Africa from. Makeba was born on the 4th of March 1932 and passed on in 9th November 2008. She was a supporter of apartheid and white minority governments in South Africa and she was mixed with music, including Afropop, jazz and world music.

Miriam Makeba Early Life

Makeba was born to Swazi and Xhosa parents in Johannesburg and, after her father’s death, was forced to find work as a child. Her first marriage was brief and reportedly violent at age 17, her only baby bore in 1950 and she survived breast cancer. The Cuban brothers, the Manhattan sisters, and a group of all females, the Skylarks, started vocaling in the 1950s, playing a combination of jazz, traditional African tune and Western folk music. They became renowned for their talents.

In 1959 Makeba played a short role in the international film anti-apartheid Come Back, Africa and led her to perform in Venice, London and New York City. She met the US singer Harry Belafonte in London, who became a mentor and colleague. She moved to New York City where her first solo album in 1960 became instantly successful. The government of the country blocked its attempt to return to South Africa for the funeral of its mother that year

Makeba was one of the most prominent Africans in the United States and was therefore for the Americans also emblematic of the African continent. Her music won her “Mama Africa,” the nickname, and she was portrayed in different ways as “African Song Queen,” “South African Song King,” and the “First Super Star” of Africa, respectively. Student Music J. U. Jacobs said Makeba’s music “was influenced and inspired by black South African and American music.”
